So just what is Asphalt Recycling?
Asphalt recycling is a process that rebuilds worn out asphalt pavement by recycling the existing roadway. Old asphalt and base materials are crushed up using a special machine called a "reclaimer" to create asphalt millings. Water is added to the asphalt millings to moisturize and compact the content. In addition other materials such as dry cement, lime, fly ash, or asphalt emulsion are added to stabilize the compound. The "reclaimer" is used again to mix all the materials to produce a strong, durable base for either an asphalt or concrete surface.
After grass is removed (if applicable) and the pavement has been completely re-graded, the asphalt millings are applied 2-3 inches thick using a regular paving machine. Weed killer is applied after the asphalt millings are spread, after which a 3-5 ton roller compacts the new recycled material.
The sun plays a major role in hardening the new recycled asphalt, and can take several months. The asphalt oils in the new compound start to rejuvenate and bond back together creating a hard surface.
This whole process is not only good for our environment, it is also more cost effective. Opting for recycled asphalt is about half the price of normal hot asphalt paving. Though you always have a choice of many concepts for paving projects, consider asphalt recycling for your next paving project.
